Case Studies

HS2 Blackford

HS2, in partnership with Affinity Water, embarked on a crucial project to lower the water table around the Blackford Pumping Station and Borehole. The primary goal was to test the borehole pumps to their full capacity by creating a new discharge route to the Grand Union Canal. The existing discharge main had been out of service for several years and was inadequate for the current requirements.

Affinity Water contracted CLC for their expertise to execute the excavation and overland installation of a new 315mm pipe from within the pumping station to the designated discharge point in the canal. This project required careful planning and execution to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and maintain uninterrupted use of the area, including the canal towpath for pedestrians.

The Solution

CLC carried out a comprehensive range of activities to fulfil the project requirements:

  • Installation of 20 metres of 12” Ductile Iron (D.I) pipe with the necessary fittings, seamlessly connecting to the existing main within the pumping station.

  • Installation of approximately 150 metres of 315mm SDR11 pipe using Butt Fusion techniques, laid overground to the discharge point.

  • Fabrication and installation of a bespoke weir box at the discharge point to control flow and ensure safe dispersion of water into the canal.

  • Construction of a temporary bridge on the canal towpath to maintain continuous access for pedestrians during the project.

  • Thorough pressure testing of the newly installed pipelines to verify their integrity and operational readiness.

  • Excavation, backfill, and reinstatement to support the above installations while adhering to environmental and structural requirements.

  • Water management in strict compliance with the Environment Agency (EA) regulations to prevent any adverse impacts on the surrounding environment.

  • Successful completion of initial testing: The new system effectively reduced the water table in the targeted area, demonstrating the pumps' full capacity and validating the newly installed discharge route.

  • Progress towards final implementation: Discussions and planning are ongoing for the second phase, which involves burying the overground pipe to finalise the installation and ensure long-term functionality.
